Touch Therapy
The University of Miami School of Medicine established the first Touch Institute in 1992. It was the first center devoted solely to the study of touch and its application in science and medicine. The touch institutes have researched the effects of massage therapy at all stages of life from newborns to senior citizens. These studies have demonstrated that TOUCH therapy has many positive effects on the system. Massage fulfills, if done properly, this very basic and fundamental need of being comforted and touched and offers more health benefits than anyone formerly realized.

Relaxation Massage
During a session, the patient will remove most of their clothing and lie on a massage table with a warm sheet draped over the body. Usually a relaxation massage can be modified and tailored to your specific desires. The massage takes place in a quiet environment with soft music in the background. The massage consists of the therapist applying gentle to medium pressure of the hands to the body, gently manipulating the tissue to promote relaxation. It is not designed for working the deeper muscles of the body, but rather a gentle kneading and rubbing of the outer layers of the body tissue. It will cover a wide range of areas on the body from head to toe. All muscles are gently worked and loosened with soothing oils so that pain and tension are slowly massaged away.
Couples Massage
Couples Massages are a relaxing experience for both you and your partner. These are perfect experiences for Anniversaries, Valentine’s Day and Christmas. They also make great gifts. Couples Massage is available at Little Kneads Therapeutic Massage and Body Work, Big Mill, or other locations.
Swedish Massage
Swedish massage employs a series of long, gliding strokes, kneading of the muscles, and vibrational taps that commonly come to mind when thinking about massage. A Swedish masseuse creates friction uses tapping across a client’s back and shoulders to promote the release of tension. Five basic strokes gliding, kneading, vibrations, friction and hacking are all applied in the direction of the heart in order to encourage blood circulation and the disposal of bodily waste. This massage is more appropriate for the client that is on medications that depress the nervous system or slow the heart rhythm. It is also very efficient in the sports massage preevent.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage
The massage works by working with the body’s own lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is responsible for immune system regulation and fluid and waste removal and aids the body in the removal of toxins. The massage is good for individuals who frequently suffer from illnesses, a faulty immune system, sports injuries, depression and emotional problems. It has been shown to have positive effects on respiratory problems. Many clients after surgery, especially Cancer surgery, have difficulty getting rid of excess fluid buildup. The only way Lymph moves to where it needs to drain and cleanse the body is through muscle contraction and action. Many of us today do not exercise like we should or cannot exercise due to a physical ailment. With Lymphatic drainage massage we start at your feet and slowly move the lymph with very gentle strokes upward toward the thoracic outlet for it to drain and cleanse through the circulatory system. We teach Neurolymphatic drainage points and exercises so that you can help yourself. We slowly unblock the areas and send the river upstream to where it can drain cleanse and re-circulate back into the system.
Fibro Massage
Fibro massage is a very gentle massage incorporating mostly “efflurage” and gentle stroking. It has been planned for people who are unable to tolerate a firmer massage due to pain. This massage is mainly aimed at the Fibromyagia community but other people can also benefit. We use this massage where indicated with our clients. This massage also gives the clients all the benefits of massage without hurting in any way.
Hot Spirit Stones Massage
During a Hot Spirit Stone massage we apply to the body hot unpolished natural basalt stones which have been taken from the earth with all the minerals that they hold. This specialty massage we use smooth, heated stones to massage the body. The heat both warms and relaxes tight muscles so the therapist can work more deeply. Through the heat and the weight of the stones, you receive a very relaxing and vasodilating massage which is relieves pain and is highly beneficial. Your body will melt like butter as the oiled hot stones are passed over your achy muscles.
Chair Massage
Chair massage is done sitting up in a massage chair. This method does not require disrobing and is done mainly for mini relaxation in offices or events. The usual time for this is from 5 to 20 minutes and works the back, shoulders arms and hands. It is a very relaxing break for groups such as medical personnel, teachers, and office workers. It is great at events like fairs and shows.
The Benefits of Touch
Our eyes, ears, nose and tongue hold the receptors for our sense of sight, hearing, smell and taste respectively. The largest organ of our body is the skin. Skin contains the receptors for our sense of TOUCH, which makes our sense of TOUCH unique.
TOUCH plays an important role in human development from infancy to seniors and the dying.
Because of our world situations TOUCH has become almost obsolete and that very important instinct of need has been replaced by a sense of fear of getting to close.
For example, massage:
- Improves circulation
- Improves immune function by improving and circulating the lymph system.
- Reduces stress hormones and releases endorphins.
- Alleviates depressive symptoms
- Facilitates weight gain in premature infants.
- Alters the EEG (brain waves ) in the direction of heightened awareness.
- Relaxes the muscle and improves flexibility.
- Increases endurance and reduces fatigue.
- Corrects structural defects caused by tightness.
- With additional music helps to relax the mind and release the spirit.
Massage has been found to also help meet that basic need and offers additional health benefits that if done on a regular basis may keep you healthier and mentally happier than any other modality. Massage has also been proven to be useful for hospice patients in managing stress and alleviating pain, which can reduce the need for psychotropic and narcotic medications, all of which can have negative side effects. TOUCH provides comfort, MASSAGE provides TOUCH, for an all over “FEEL GOOD” and “HEALTHIER” YOU…… Reach for all you can!
